Worlds Around Me
Born in England in 1983, a grandson of a professional photographer who as a child I was close to, I have lived much of my adolescence and all my adult life in Saskatoon. I have returned to England to reconnect with family and friends and have spent some time looking at how living on an island might change the way you look at life. I have a series of photographs which look at the boundary between land and sea and as a result have become fascinated by other boundaries, boundaries that separate us from dream and reality, faith and belief, nature and human construction.
Saskatoon is my home, my chosen home. Thousands upon thousands of pictures have been taken of Saskatoon. I think I have come to see Saskatoon in a way that few do. My pictures look at Saskatoon as a magical and exotic city on the boundary of the natural world. It is an exotic city tied to the natural world by the extraordinary weather we see around us all the time.
The more I explore Saskatoon, the more I realize that this is a lifetime exploration. No matter how many times I look at a scene, it becomes dramatically transformed in just a matter of hours; becoming something almost unrecognizable. In my pictures, an alley way becomes a portal to another life: a bridge floats in mid air; Saskatoon becomes a winter fortress of solitude. The river and the bridges that connect communities become otherworldly.
I have been taking photographs since the age of 13. At present I am working to get certification in a trade, and although I enjoy the challenge of a "job well done", it is photography that is my passion. I know that no matter what occupation or what relationships come my way, photography really is my window to all the worlds around me. It is a passion that will not be extinguished.
